A JOINT STATEMENT FROM HARINGEY COUNCIL AND HIGHGATE WOOD SCHOOL

At the end of the school summer term a former Highgate Wood School assistant headteacher, Andy Adams, was sentenced to jail for a series of serious offences committed during the early 1980s, when he was a PE teacher at the school.

Mr Adams taught at Highgate Wood until 2004 and continued to occasionally support the school’s work experience programme until 2010. The offences first came to light several years after Mr Adams’ retirement from teaching and some time after any ongoing involvement he had with the school had ended. However, the very understandable shock and concern felt by parents and carers about this case is shared by both the wider school community and the local authority.

The school and the council take responsibility for safeguarding children extremely seriously, and have clear and robust procedures for reporting and investigating any concerns.

Given the very serious nature of the concerns raised by this case, the independent Chair of the Haringey Local Safeguarding Children’s Board is going to review how the case has been handled since the allegations were received. Both the school and the council very much welcome this.

YEAR 7 TRIP TO BRUGES

Due to problems on the Channel Tunnel, the Year 7 trip to Bruges had to be rerouted - eventually to Camber Sands in Sussex.  As it turned out the students had a thoroughly enjoyable time on the coast, but obviously it was not the learning experience that we had planned for.  We are speaking to the travel company and their insurers to see what recompense will be available. We are also looking at the possibility of restaging the trip in the future.

We will update those involved as soon as we have fuller information.

PARK ROAD LEISURE CENTRE AND A SMALL AREA OF OUR BACK PLAYGROUND

Barnes Construction Group have won a £6 million contract to completely refurbish Park Road Leisure Centre. They have approached the school to use an area of our back playground as their Welfare Compound. What this means is that they will have a contained area (with a double fence) inside the back school gate which will contain eight containers to be used as offices, storage etc.

The area has been securely sealed off and will not affect our students (the area being used is minimal). Barnes have agreed to do some work on the school site at the end of the project so we will also see a benefit.

The project has now started and is scheduled to finish in October.

HARINGEY COUNCIL PUBLIC MEETING: Outstanding for All.

Haringey Council invites all parents and carers to attend a public meeting about education standards in Haringey and your local area.

Two meetings are being held at Rokesly Junior School, Rokesly Avenue, London N8 8NH on Thursday 13 February.

We are holding two meetings, in the hope that this makes it possible for more parents and carers to attend.

Meeting 1:        4pm – 5.30pm

Meeting 2:        6.30pm – 7.45pm

The meetings are an opportunity for parents and carers to hear about and discuss local educational developments and there will be time specifically allocated to take questions from parents and carers on school improvement.

We are also planning to provide a free crèche during both meetings. We hope this also makes it easier for parents and carers to attend.

It would be helpful if you could let us know if you are planning on attending and whether you would like to use the crèche, by emailing events@haringey.gov.uk or calling 020 8489 5000020 8489 5000. You can also get further information about the meetings by using these contact details.

NON UNIFORM DAY - DRESS GUIDANCE

Click here for the letter from Mr Cozier about dress guidance for non-uniform day.

17/12/13

NON UNIFORM DAY - DRESS GUIDANCE

Thursday is non-uniform day to raise money for both Hillcrest and World Challenge.
Students are still expected to dress appropriately for a working day at school. They should not wear anything that may be regarded as too revealing or immodest. The examples below are indicative rather than exhaustive, but includes things like:
Leggings that are overly transparent
Shorts that are very short, i.e. revealing underwear
Skirts that are very short, i.e. revealing the majority of the thighs
Tops that are overly transparent or inappropriately tight or low cut
Tops that reveal bare midriffs
*  In addition, students must not wear any item of clothing that has any potentially offensive symbols, slogans or logos.

If in doubt it is best to err on the side of caution. Students who are considered to be dressed inappropriately will be escorted to the Hall where they will either be allowed to wear something more suitable (eg school sports kit) or may be asked to return home to get changed into something more appropriate.

If, in the unlikely event, we consider it appropriate to send a student home, parents’/carers will be contacted first to confirm this. As in all matters of this sort, the decision of the Headteacher is final.

VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED ON THE PARENT GOVERNOR ELECTION
Thanks to everyone involved, especially the candidates. 05/12/13

PARENT GOVERNOR ELECTIONS UPDATE

We have now made available voting forms online for those who have not yet received them from school. Click here to download.

Below please find the statements from the six candidates. FORMS NEED TO BE COMPLETED AND RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL FOR MONDAY 2ND DECEMBER

Paul Bennett
HWS faces an increasing range of challenges and demands. The parent governors working within the Governing Body must be active in agreeing responses and initiatives to protect and develop the inclusive and supportive HWS ethos.
I believe my abilities and experience would be useful to the school, and strongly support all parents' right /
responsibility to be involved appropriately with the school community.
My daughter is in Year 8: I served 4 years as Chair of Governors (Parent Governor) at her primary school. I retired recently as a senior official of a teachers' union and the European education union movement.

Julia Chalfen
I work as an administrator at a local nursery school and have 2 boys at Highgate Wood, Years 8 and 11.
I am a strong believer in the importance of community and in local schools for local children.
During my boys’ years at the school I have been really impressed by how such a large institution caters so well to the individual needs of so many children, both educationally and pastorally, and am now keen to participate in the continuing work towards creating an excellent school, with a great reputation, by taking an active role in the school’s governance.

Paul Clift
'I’m Paul Clift and I have a son in year 7 at HWS and a daughter at Rokesly Junior School. I work at Islington Council managing the environmental protection and energy advice teams and have lived in the Crouch End area for the last 20 years. I’m also a parent governor at Rokesly Junior School, a role I see as incredibly important in supporting children’s education, helping raise standards and assisting the school to run. I would really value the opportunity to become a governor at HWS, contributing to academic achievement and a supportive and positive learning environment for all.

Howard Jones
My youngest daughter is in Year 9 and my eldest attended HWS before going on to University in 2012.
If elected my priority will be to promote access to the humanities, art, drama, music and sport for all students as I passionately believe these are essential to a well-rounded education. Protecting and extending these key elements of the curriculum has never been more important as central government
policies and ideology push them to the margins. HWS is rightly proud of its achievements in these areas and needs the full support of the parent body in sustaining them.

John Paveley
Highgate Wood School is at the heart of our community, therefore we should all care how it grows .I want to be part of that process as an active and contributing parent governor. I’m a veteran Crouch Ender with 3 children, one at HWS. I am heavily involved with many local sports groups and will contribute my ideas to
HWS sports. I also work in the music business and therefore I can share my knowledge with the Arts school that is HWS.

Milly Williamson
I teach Film Studies at Brunel University in Film Studies. I passionately believe in comprehensive and public education and am an active member of the Campaign to Defend the Public University. I share HWS values of the value of comprehensive education and the importance of education addressing the potential of each individual child. I have experience as a school governor, having spent three years as a governor of St. Aidan’s Primary School. I will make every effort to contribute to the continuing improvement and success of HWS and to ensure that our children receive the highest quality education.
